Description

Queen Victoria, 2003 – Banksy

About this piece: “Queen Vic” by Banksy (unsigned edition) is an early and provocative print released by Pictures on Walls, with only 50 signed pieces and 500 unsigned works. This artwork, one of Banksy’s most controversial, depicts Queen Victoria in full ceremonial regalia, sitting on the face of a woman dressed in stockings and suspenders. The red background contrasts sharply with the black and white stencil outlines, creating a striking visual impact.

The piece is believed to be inspired by a statement attributed to Queen Victoria, claiming women could not be gay. The monarch’s anti-homosexual laws further marginalized and punished homosexuals, with these laws persisting until the late 1960s. Banksy’s artwork serves as a thinly veiled critique of the establishment, using subversive imagery and humor to deliver a powerful message. The Queen, symbolizing power and control, subjugates her victim, potentially representing the oppressed lower classes.
