Description
Trolley Hunters, 2007 – Banksy
About this piece: Trolley Hunters by Banksy is a satirical, playful, and provocative piece that first appeared in 2006 during the artist’s Los Angeles exhibition titled “Barely Legal,” held in an LA industrial estate. This piece was released alongside a collection of prints known as the Barely Legal Box Set, which also included works like Grannies, Applause, Sale Ends, and Festival.
The artwork presents a satirical commentary on how modern life has distanced us from our primal, self-sufficient roots. Instead of being the adept hunter-gatherers we once were, we have become passive and reliant on modern conveniences. In the artwork, Banksy juxtaposes three cavemen, armed with simple spears, with three supermarket trolleys. The cavemen symbolize humanity’s natural state and its historical relationship with survival and resourcefulness. The trolleys, on the other hand, represent modern consumerism and dependency on manufactured goods and conveniences.
This contrast highlights how modern humans have lost touch with their basic instincts and skills, becoming instead dependent on the structures and systems of contemporary society. Banksy uses this humorous yet critical depiction to challenge viewers’ perceptions and encourage reflection on the nature of progress and the cost of modernity.
Edition: Unsigned Edition. Includes Provenance and Pest control certification.
