Aladdin Sane 50 Years Book
About this piece: The definitive celebration of the iconic album and music’s most famous photograph – with unseen images
On the 19th of April 1973, the Aladdin Sane album was released to critical acclaim. The music speaks for itself but rarely has a portrait on an album cover become the definitive image of one man. Rarely has an image become known as a cultural icon (as quoted by the V&A) or popularly known as the ‘Mona Lisa of Pop’. Thousands of words have been written on the image, numerous interpretations of the pool of liquid on David Bowie’s collarbone and the lighting flash has been replicated ad infinitum. For the 50th anniversary, this book is written in celebration of this iconic image of David Bowie. Half a century after the album’s release this image is still controversial, fresh, challenging, beautiful and ethereal. One never tires of its simplicity and boldness. Join us in celebrating this unique photo session.
Fifty years after the iconic Aladdin Sane photo session was shot by photographer Duffy, this book is released to celebrate the anniversary. The book contains previously unseen photographs from the iconic Aladdin Sane cover shoot which have never been seen anywhere before now, fifty years since they were taken. A QR code within the book will take you to a page where more images, video interviews, news and information will be added and updated. We welcome participation from readers and fans to share their stories in celebration and memory of this defining album.
Alongside Duffy’s incredible photographs are essays on Bowie’s remarkable album and the story behind the famous cover itself. Edited by Chris Duffy and includes essays by renowned writers and Bowie experts Paul Morley, Charles Shaar Murray, Nicholas Pegg, Kevin Cann, Jérôme Soligny and Geoffrey Marsh – curator of the V&A’s record-breaking David Bowie Is exhibition.
In a breathtaking package designed by long-time Bowie collaborators Barnbrook creative studio, the book pays tribute to a seminal album and an image that will live forever more in rock ‘n’ roll history.
