About this piece: The Stone Roses members Alan Wren, Ian Brown, Mani, and John Squire lay in paint during a photoshoot in Manchester on November 5, 1989. One of the pioneering musical acts the city, they would be the influence for other major Manchester acts like Oasis.
One of the world’s most esteemed photographers, Cummins honed his skills over four years before immersing himself in Manchester’s thriving punk scene of the 1970s. Over the following decades, he captured iconic images of Joy Division, took live shots and portraits of David Bowie, and created a legendary NME cover featuring The Stone Roses. Cummins’ photographs have graced magazine covers, been showcased in art galleries and international films, and are part of esteemed collections at The National Portrait Gallery and the V&A, among other institutions.
