About this piece: This is based on Steve McQueen in the 1971 film “Le Mans” in which he raced a Gulf Porsche 917. The background collage features the official race line up for Le Mans 1970, from which actual footage was used in the film.

“I was the first artist to combine portraiture with neon art. The inspiration came from both Andy Warhol’s 1970’s / 80’s ‘celebrity portraits’ and the work of neon artists such as Dan Flavin, Tracey Emin and Chris Bracey”.
